On Tuesday nights I have been running with the Scores Running Club. It's been motivating running and talking with fellow members each week about their plans for upcoming races and their specific goals. I find that the conversation is always turned back on me... What are my plans? What are my goals? So, I figure it's about time I make some, and I can't think of a more concrete way of making goals then putting them up here. |
In making goals I know there are some important factors to consider:
Since I began running again about a year and a half ago my favorite moments have been when I have been racing. I love racing, I love pushing myself, and I love feeling fast. This was the part of running I have always loved. The aspect of training is what I have always struggled with.
As of late, my training consistency has improved and I think a lot of it has to do with the connections I've made in the Scores Running Club. Knowing that there are all of these people out there "doing it too" has helped me on days to get out the door, or do a run that I otherwise wouldn't have if I was alone. I beginning to feel stronger, faster as the weeks go by. I'm excited about the goals I've set for myself.
One of my BIG GOALS would be to PR in the 5k - 18:20 which I ran in college.
The goals I've made below I see as stepping stones to the above goal. I know it's going to take me awhile to get back to my "college speed", but what keeps me going on this venture is knowing that I can do better and be faster then that 18:20.
I want to prove it to myself that I can do it. That's my why.
SHORT TERM GOALS: February 2016 (3 months)
1. Run at least 4 times per-week
2. Run a Half-Marathon Sub 1:45 (8:00 pace)
3. Race a 5k Sub 20:00 (6:26 pace)
...I know what you're thinking, if I'm going to achieve any of these goals I sure as hell better be running at least 4 times per-week!
LONG TERM GOALS: May 2016 (6 months)
1. Run consistently at 35-40 miles per/week
2. Run a Half-Marathon Sub 1:30:00 (6:51 pace)
3. Race a 5k Sub 19:00 (6:05 pace)
And... {BREATHEEEEEE}
HOLY MOLY I HAVE GOALS!
- Make goals that are both challenging, yet realistic.
- Be specific and make it measurable (distance, pace, time).
- Set a time frame in which the goal should be achieved (short term / long term).
- Choose goals that mean something to you...

HOLY MOLY I HAVE GOALS!
Making goals is a scary thing...
Now that they are made and they are out there for the world to see, I feel the universe already reminding me to get out the door and run already!
The scariest aspect that comes along with making goals to which we can all relate is not being able to achieve them. But, as my friend Ralph Waldo Emerson says, "Always do what you're afraid to do."
So, even if something is scary, live a little, because you won't know until you try.
